This is the J.C. Higgins Trigger for the Model 10 bolt-action shotgun, Sears model numbers 583.1 through 583.25.
J.C. Higgins was a trade name used by Sears, Roebuck and Co., and the Model 10 was built for them by High Standard. The 583 prefix is Sears’ supplier code for High Standard, and the digits after the decimal encode gauge and production year — 583.1 is a first-year 12 gauge, 583.2 a first-year 16 gauge, 583.3 a first-year 20 gauge, then the sequence repeats for later years. Sears catalogued the Model 10 from 1946 to 1958 in .410, 12, 16 and 20 gauge.
This trigger has light corrosion on the upper sides of the body, priced accordingly. The finger piece and the working surfaces are unaffected. If you want a cleaner example, see the ones listed separately.
Included: Trigger only, the exact part pictured.
Fits:
- J.C. Higgins Model 10, Sears numbers 583.1 through 583.25
Note on the Sears recall: Sears recalled 12 gauge Model 10 shotguns under numbers 583.13 through 583.22 for a bolt failure in which the bolt could dislodge from the action and strike the shooter. If your gun falls in that range, have it checked by a gunsmith before fitting any parts to it or firing it.
Fitting: This is a fire control part and should be fitted by a gunsmith. A trigger that is worn, chipped or incorrectly mated to the sear can produce a light or creeping release, failure to hold at cock, or discharge on closing the bolt. After installation, function check with dummy shells or an empty chamber before loading: verify it cocks and holds, that the trigger releases cleanly and resets, that the safety holds, and that closing and working the bolt does not release the sear.
Please note: Buyer is responsible for verifying correct fit for their specific firearm. Installation should be performed by a qualified gunsmith. Please review all photos, as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive.
Condition: Used trigger with the finger piece retaining most of its dark blued finish and the upper body worn to gray steel. Light corrosion shows as fine dark pitting across the upper sides. The pivot hole is open with no elongation, the sear notch at the top is square and complete with no chipping, and the body is true with no bends.
