This is the Shotgun Magazine Plug, turned wood, 7-7/8″ overall with a .775″ diameter stepped head, for 12 and 16 gauge magazine tubes. Being wood, it can be cut shorter to suit your gun.
Federal migratory bird regulations require that a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells be plugged with a one-piece filler that cannot be removed without disassembling the gun. That rule is why these are solid turned dowels rather than a spring, clip, or two-piece insert — a wood plug of this type satisfies it, and trimming one to length leaves it a single piece.

Fits:
- 12 gauge pump and semi-automatic shotguns with a magazine tube that accepts a .775″ head
- 16 gauge pump and semi-automatic shotguns in the same tube range
- Guns needing 7-7/8″ or less of magazine fill to reach a three-shell total — cut to length as required
Does not fit:
- 20 gauge and .410 magazine tubes — smaller inside diameter, these take a narrower plug
- Guns needing more than 7-7/8″ of fill; it can be shortened but not lengthened
Fitting: Remove the magazine cap and spring retainer, drop the plug into the tube, then reinstall the spring and follower. If it needs shortening, measure against your magazine first, cut with a fine-tooth saw, and sand the cut end square so it seats flat against the follower. Load dummy rounds and confirm the gun holds no more than two in the magazine plus one in the chamber before hunting over it.
