This is the Remington 870 magazine spring retainer, the old style, for 12 gauge magazine tubes without dimples.
Remington used two arrangements. The old style is a split spring-steel cup pressed into the open end of a plain tube, held by its own tension against the tube walls. The later style is plastic, with a slot that locks into a pair of dimples pressed into the tube and teeth on the end that bear against the magazine cap. Remington has confirmed the dimples exist specifically to retain the plastic type — without them it will not stay put.
Checking which you have takes ten seconds. Unscrew the magazine cap and look into the end of the tube. A plastic plug with large teeth means a dimpled tube and the later retainer. A split steel cup means the old style. Guns of the earlier arrangement also carry a spring-loaded plunger in the barrel hood and detent grooves inside the magazine cap, both of which the later design dropped.
This is also the retainer wanted after dimples have been swaged or drilled out to fit a magazine extension, since the plastic type then has nothing left to lock into.
Included: Magazine spring retainer only, the exact part pictured.
Fits:
- Remington 870, 1100 and 11-87 in 12 gauge, magazine tubes without dimples
- Tubes that have had their dimples removed
- Other 12 gauge shotgun magazine tubes of the same internal diameter
Does not fit:
- Dimpled magazine tubes, which take the later plastic ratchet retainer
- 16, 20 and 28 gauge and .410 magazine tubes
Fitting: Compress the spring and press the retainer square into the tube until it sits flush. Confirm it holds the spring with the magazine cap removed before the gun is used.
Please note: Buyer is responsible for verifying correct fit for their specific firearm. Installation should be performed by a qualified gunsmith. Please review all photos, as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive.
Condition: Even dark grey to black finish with light scattered surface oxidation and a dusting of pale residue in the recesses. No active rust, pitting or scaling. Slots and split are cleanly cut with square edges, no burring, spreading or tearing. Holds its shape with no distortion, bore and outer profile round and true. Faint forming texture and light tooling marks remain on the inner surfaces. Scattered light handling marks on the outer face. No cracks, bends or repairs.
