This is the Savage Stevens 219 220 safety push rod, factory part 220-198, for the automatic top tang safety on Savage and Stevens single-shot break-action guns. Savage’s own catalog copy specifies the safety as automatic — it sets itself as the action is opened rather than waiting on the shooter — and this rod is part of that mechanism.
The Savage Utility Gun combinations were not separate guns. Savage described each as a Model 219 rifle with a shotgun barrel and fore-end fitted to the rifle frame, packed complete as one unit in a box. Same frame, same safety, which is why the combination model numbers sit on this list.
The later B and L series actions look the same from the outside but changed the ignition and cocking arrangement. Go by the suffix stamped on your gun rather than the shape of the frame.

Does not fit:
- Savage and Stevens 219B, 219L, 220B, 220L and 220LD — the later series changed the ignition and cocking arrangement
- Stevens Model 94 and the other exposed-hammer single-barrel shotguns, which carry no tang safety
Fitting: This is a safety part. Have it fitted by a gunsmith and verify the safety holds in both positions on an empty chamber before loading.

Condition:
Used. Grey steel throughout with light surface scuffing and scattered handling marks. No rust or pitting. Rods straight with no bends or twist along their length. Formed ends and paddles intact, no cracks or deformation. See photos.
