This is the J.C. Higgins Safety Slide Assembly for the Model 10 bolt-action shotgun, Sears model numbers 583.1 through 583.25. It comprises the safety slide, the safety spring and two screws.
J.C. Higgins was a trade name used by Sears, Roebuck and Co., and the Model 10 was built for them by High Standard. The 583 prefix is Sears’ supplier code for High Standard, and the digits after the decimal encode gauge and production year — 583.1 is a first-year 12 gauge, 583.2 a first-year 16 gauge, 583.3 a first-year 20 gauge, then the sequence repeats for later years. Sears catalogued the Model 10 from 1946 to 1958 in .410, 12, 16 and 20 gauge.

Note on the Sears recall: Sears recalled 12 gauge Model 10 shotguns under numbers 583.13 through 583.22 for a bolt failure in which the bolt could dislodge from the action and strike the shooter. If your gun falls in that range, have it checked by a gunsmith before fitting any parts to it or firing it.
Fitting: The safety slide operates the safety on the receiver, tensioned by the spring so it holds position rather than drifting. After installation, check with the gun empty that the safety moves positively between positions, holds in each without creeping, and that the trigger will not release when the safety is engaged.

Condition: Used safety slide assembly with most of the dark blued finish intact across all four parts, showing light wear on the raised edges and the thumbpiece. The serrations are sharp and complete, the spring is flat and true with no set or kinks, the mounting slots are clean with no elongation or cracking, and both screw heads are undamaged with clean slots.
