This is the J.C. Higgins Hammer for the Model 28, 29, 30, 31, 33 and 34 .22 rifles, sold under both the J.C. Higgins and Ted Williams names.

Both were trade names used by Sears, Roebuck and Co., with the rifles built for them by High Standard. Ted Williams replaced J.C. Higgins as the Sears brand in the early 1960s, and guns already in production carried on under the new rollmark — so the same hammer serves both. The 28, 29, 30 and 31 are essentially the same semi-automatic .22 with cosmetic differences between them, some with a left-hand charging handle and some right, and the 31 offered with a retractable sling in the stock.

Included: Hammer only, the exact part pictured.

Fits:

  • J.C. Higgins Model 30, 31
  • J.C. Higgins Model 28, 29
  • J.C. Higgins Model 33, 34
  • Ted Williams rifles built on the same action

Fitting: This is a fire control part and should be fitted by a gunsmith. The hammer strikes the firing pin when released by the sear, and a hammer that is worn, chipped or incorrectly mated can follow the bolt down, fire more than one round on a single trigger pull, or fail to hold at cock. After installation, function check with dummy rounds or an empty chamber before loading: verify it cocks and holds, that the trigger releases cleanly and resets, that the safety holds, and that cycling the action by hand does not release the hammer. Test-fire single rounds before loading a full magazine.

Please note: Buyer is responsible for verifying correct fit for their specific firearm. Installation should be performed by a qualified gunsmith. Please review all photos, as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive.

Condition: Used, with the dark factory finish largely intact and thinning to grey on the high points and edges. The sear notch is crisp and square with no rounding, chipping or peening. The firing pin strike face is unmarred, the pivot hole is round and unwallowed, and the body is straight with no bend. Light scuffing on the sides and a small nick on one upper edge, away from any working surface. No rust, pitting or cracks.
