This is the Remington 700 left hand safety, the new style, for post-1982 Walker trigger assemblies.
Remington dropped the bolt lock in March 1982, and the entire change lives in this one part. The old style safety carries a long extension that catches the bolt and holds it shut when the rifle is on safe. The new style omits that extension. Everything else in the trigger is the same.
Left-hand 700 production began in 1973, so the old style window on a left-hand gun runs only from then to March 1982. Anything later takes this part.
Identification is simple either way. With the rifle unloaded, put the safety on and try the bolt. If it opens, the assembly is new style. If the bolt is locked shut, it is old style and needs the longer safety.
The change came from the 700 ADL. Its blind magazine has to be emptied by cycling the bolt, which on a bolt-lock rifle meant pushing the safety to fire in order to unload.
Included: Safety only, the exact part pictured.
Fits:
- Remington Model 700 left-hand rifles with Walker trigger, built from March 1982
Does not fit:
- Right-hand Model 700 actions
- Left-hand 700s built before March 1982 — those use the longer bolt-lock safety
- X-Mark Pro triggers, which superseded the Walker
- Remington Model Seven, which was never offered in a left-hand version
Fitting: This is a fire control part. Have it fitted by a qualified gunsmith and function-check the rifle on an empty chamber before loading. Confirm the safety holds in both positions, that the rifle does not fire when the safety is moved from safe to fire, that the sear holds when the bolt is closed briskly, and that the trigger resets cleanly. Do not adjust the trigger to compensate for fit.
Please note: Buyer is responsible for verifying correct fit for their specific firearm. Installation should be performed by a qualified gunsmith. Please review all photos, as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive.
Condition: Used, with an even dark finish across both faces and no thinning. Knurling on the thumb piece is sharp. The detent face and the sear-side contact surface are unworn, with no rounding, galling or peening. The body is straight with no bend, the pivot hole is round and unwallowed, and the smaller holes are clean. No rust, pitting or cracks.
