This is the S&W New Departure Trigger, for the Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless revolver, from post-1926 production.
The rear of the trigger carries the REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. stamp, and that marking dates the part. Smith & Wesson issued the order to apply it to hammers and triggers in June 1926 — and despite how it reads, it was not a patent notice on the mechanical design. S&W used a chemical case hardening process that produced brighter colours with a strong blue component, and the marking was their claim on that process. They carried it through the 1930s, dropped it on wartime military production, and never brought it back afterward. Since the New Departure ran from 1887 to 1940, the stamp narrows this trigger to the final fourteen years of a fifty-three year production run, which is why it is absent on earlier guns.
Identifying features: REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. stamped on the rear of the trigger, crisp and fully legible. If the trigger in your revolver is unmarked, yours is an earlier gun and this is not a match.

Condition: Even grey to dark grey overall with mottled patina and scattered dark areas, no remaining bright finish. Light surface oxidation with a few small darker spots, no active rust, pitting or scaling. Trigger face is smooth with no rounding at the tip and no peening. Engagement and step surfaces are cleanly formed with no chipping or rounding visible. Both holes are round and unelongated with clean edges. The REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. marking on the rear of the trigger is crisp and fully legible. Original file and machining marks remain across the flats. No cracks, bends or evidence of stoning, grinding or other alteration.
