This is the Colt Mustang Sear, stamped variation, for the .380 ACP Mustang and Mustang Pocketlite.

Colt opened this line in 1983 with the Mark IV/Series 80 Government Model .380, a pocket pistol scaled to roughly 78 percent of the 1911. The Mustang followed in 1986 with a shortened barrel, slide and grip frame holding two fewer rounds, the Pocketlite arrived in 1987, and the Plus II in 1988 with the longer Government-length grip frame. The original run ended in 1996, and Colt brought the Pocketlite back in 2011.

Colt used two sear patterns across this family, one milled from bar stock and one stamped and formed from sheet. These are the stamped pattern, identifiable by the folded profile and the sheet-formed edges rather than machined flats. If the sear in your pistol is a solid machined part, this is not the one you want — compare before ordering.

Included: One of the sears pictured. Sold individually.

Fits:

  • Colt Mustang, .380 ACP
  • Colt Mustang Pocketlite, .380 ACP

Not verified: The Mustang Plus II, which differs from the standard Mustang chiefly in grip frame length and is a strong candidate but one we have not compared directly. Also unverified against the Government Model .380 and the polymer-framed Mustang XSP introduced in 2013. Reviewers report Colt designed the 2011-onward reintroduced parts to interchange with original production, which is promising but not something we have confirmed on the bench.

Fitting: This is a fire control part and should be fit by a qualified gunsmith. Compare the nose, the pivot hole and the overall profile against the sear coming out of your pistol before installing. Once assembled, function check on an empty gun before loading: confirm the hammer holds at cock, that it does not drop when the frame is bumped, and that the trigger releases and resets cleanly. This is a Series 80 design, so verify the firing pin safety functions as well — owners of these pistols report the sear spring and the firing pin safety as the two most common trouble spots, so inspect the sear spring and its clip while you have the pistol open. Watch for hammer follow and failure to reset. Do not load the pistol until it passes.

Please note: Buyer is responsible for verifying correct fit for their specific firearm. Installation should be performed by a qualified gunsmith. Please review all photos, as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive.

Condition: Used. Stamping and forming marks from manufacture are still visible on the flats. No rust, no pitting, no chips, and no cracks at the folds — the area worth checking first on a formed part. Bright contact wear shows along the working edges from normal cycling. Pivot holes are round with clean bore walls, and all pieces are true with no bends or spread at the folds.
