This is the Springfield Safety Lock Assembly, drawing no. B8759, for the U.S. Rifle, cal. .30, M1903, M1903A1, M1903A3 and M1903A4.
The assembly is a thumb-piece riveted to a spindle, with a spring and plunger holding it in the safe or ready position. Ordnance catalogued one part number across the whole family — the same B8759 appears in the bolt group for the 1903 and A1 and again for the A3 and A4. The only part of the bolt group that changed between them is the firing pin rod.
Joe Poyer’s The M1903 Springfield Rifle and Its Variations identifies five safety lock types, three on service rifles and two on competitive rifles. The Type 1 was close to the Argentine and Swedish Mauser safety but lacked the spring-loaded ball in the thumbpiece; it rattled in the M1903, so a spring-loaded spindle was added in 1904 to create the Type 2. Types 1 and 2 are concave and unmarked. The Type 3 was made for the M1903A3 by Remington, marked R, and by Smith Corona, unmarked, and is functionally identical to the Type 2. Type 3 came in two variations: the 1st with an elliptical safety lock axle in cross section, the 2nd hemispherical. Smith Corona used only the 2nd Variation. All types interchange across the 1903 and 1903A3, so the type matters for correctness to a particular rifle rather than for fit.
This example. Type 3, 2nd Variation, identified by its hemispherical safety lock axle, and marked with the Remington R. Mixed lettering, block SAFE and serif READY.
Included: Safety lock assembly only, the exact part pictured. Thumb-piece, spindle, spring and plunger.
Fits:
- U.S. Rifle, cal. .30, M1903
- U.S. Rifle, cal. .30, M1903A1
- U.S. Rifle, cal. .30, M1903A3
- U.S. Rifle, cal. .30, M1903A4
Fitting: The safety lock controls the firing mechanism and locks the bolt in the safe position. It is a fire control part and should be fitted by a gunsmith. After installation, function check with dummy rounds or an empty chamber before loading: verify the safety moves positively between ready and safe, holds in each position, that the striker is blocked on safe, and that the rifle cocks, holds and releases cleanly on ready.
Please note: Buyer is responsible for verifying correct fit for their specific firearm. Installation should be performed by a qualified gunsmith. Please review all photos, as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive.
Condition: Used safety lock assembly with an intact parkerized finish showing a fine granular texture, and light wear on the raised edges of the thumb-piece. The SAFE and READY markings are crisp and fully legible. No rust or pitting. The spindle point is complete with no chipping or rounding, and the rivet joint at the thumb-piece is tight with no play.
