This is the Stevens Side Release Lever, part no. 940E-416, for the Stevens Model 940 and Springfield Models 944 and 947 single-barrel break-open shotguns.

Springfield was a house brand name used on guns built by J. Stevens Arms, which Savage had acquired in 1920. The 940 and the 944 and 947 are the same shotgun under different rollmarks, which is why one release lever serves all three. These are the side-lever models of the family — the letter suffix indicates a side lever rather than the top lever used on other Stevens single barrels.
