This is the Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless Sear, for the Colt Model M pocket pistol.
Browning designed it and Colt built roughly 570,000 between 1903 and 1945. The factory called it the Model M. The .32 ACP gun is the 1903 and the .380 ACP is the 1908 — the same pistol in two chamberings, which is why one sear serves both.
Forty-two years of production means changes. Type I carried a 4″ barrel with a bushing; Types 2 onward went to 3.75″. Type 4 added a magazine disconnector, on .380 serials 92,894 through 134,499, which puts another component into the trigger group. Compare this part against the sear coming out of your pistol rather than going by the model name.
Included: Sear only, the exact part pictured.
Fits:
- Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless, .32 ACP
- Colt Model 1908 Pocket Hammerless, .380 ACP
Does not fit: Two Colts that get confused with this one every time. The Model 1908 Vest Pocket is a .25 ACP striker-fired pistol — a separate design that shares only the year. The Model 1903 Pocket Hammer is a .38 ACP pistol from the M1900 line, sharing the year and half the name but nothing else. If either of those is what you have, this is not your part.
Not verified: We cannot confirm which of the five types this sear came out of, and we have not compared it across all of them. If your pistol falls in the magazine-disconnector range, compare before ordering.
Fitting: This is a fire control part and should be fit by a qualified gunsmith. Compare the nose, the pivot hole and the overall profile against the sear coming out of your pistol before installing. Once assembled, function check on an empty gun before loading: confirm the hammer holds at cock, that it does not drop when the frame is bumped, and that the trigger releases and resets cleanly. This pistol carries a grip safety and a slide lock safety, and later guns add a magazine disconnector — verify each one that your pistol has. Watch for hammer follow and failure to reset. Do not load the pistol until it passes.
Please note: Buyer is responsible for verifying correct fit for their specific firearm. Installation should be performed by a qualified gunsmith. Please review all photos, as they are part of the description and show the actual item you will receive.
Condition: Used, with the original dark finish on the outer surfaces and the machining marks from manufacture still visible across the flats. The bright surfaces inside the fork and along the slot are as-machined from the factory, not polishing or refinish work — Colt left internal faces in the white. No rust, no pitting, no chips. Both legs are straight and parallel with no spread at the fork, and the pivot hole is round with clean bore walls and aligned through both legs. The hooked foot is intact with no cracking at the root. Bright contact wear along the working edges is consistent with normal service.
